I really must update this blog but truth is Im absolutely knackered after a weekend of partying in Cabo Roig on the Costa Blanca. Hundreds of fellow paddies filled the Ryanair flight to Murcia weighed down with euros. Bars and their staff seemed rushed off their feet after a winter season that had seen some shops and pubs go to the wall due to lack of custom. Indeed one barmaid asked me if it was a holiday weekend in Ireland, so surprised was she at the numbers of us spending like there was no tomorrow.
Theres nothing I like better than a good political debate when I have a few drinks on me..so I started the ball rolling at 3.30am on Sunday morning outside the Trinity Bar, a popular late night watering hole for Paddies who dont want to go home. The consensus of opinion was very anti Brian Cowan and Fianna Fail..but as one guy told me: "what choice do we have, who else can lead the country?". When I put forward the proposition of a people revolution (led by me)I was met by wall of resistance. "Look here missus", said one punter, "I still have a job, Ive got a few bob in my pocket and I plan to turn off the radio and ignore all talk of recession". Yes, it seems that the "Im alright Jack' brigade are growing in number.
Who can blame them really.
The problem of finding jobs for almost 400,000 seems insoluble. If you've got a job then all you need to do is avert your eyes if you find yourself passing the que at your local welfare office. If you hear about gangland crime then breath a sigh of relief that you arent living in one of the areas where people are being held to ransom by teenagers with guns.
Lets be positive here.
Lets not admit that the party is over. Lets not admit that we cant create enough jobs to go around now or in the future. Lets not examine the reality that we are going to have to sacrifice our champagne lifestyles to pay the growing welfare bill. Lets not face the fact that in this small city of Dublin none of us are more than a mile or two from a coked up teen with a gun.
As the song goes "Lets face the music and dance".
